ISO nominated for Grammy Award
The Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Rumon Gamba, the orchestra’s main conductor, have been nominated for the respected Grammy Awards for their masterly take on the work of French composer Vincent d’Indy. The album, “D'Indy: Orchestral Works, Vol. 1,” was released by British record label Chandos earlier this year.
“A Grammy nomination is a great honor for any musician, and for us it is especially important because this is the first time that Icelandic artists are nominated in the Classical category,” comments ISO Programme Director Árni Heimir Ingólfsson. “The field is incredibly competitive. If you think about it, nearly each one of the world’s best symphony orchestras released new CDs in the past year: the Berlin, Vienna, New York Philharmonics, London and Boston Symphony Orchestras, etc. Yet little Iceland is up there with the Chicago Symphony, one of the finest in the world and the only "major" orchestra to make this year’s best performance list. It is a message to us and to Iceland that our work in the past few years has paid off and that we can now finally count ourselves among the "big players" in the orchestra world.”
